The NYPD has launched “Operation Front Door” to address quality-of-life issues in Midtown Manhattan, focusing on illegal street vendors and unregistered pedicab operators in areas like Times Square and Grand Central Station. Many pedicabs were found with illegal modifications like motors, lights, and speakers, along with misleading pricing tactics that have led to complaints from tourists. Several pedicabs were impounded and won’t be released until operators provide proper documentation. While some illegal vendors escaped, the crackdown is part of a broader city effort to tackle issues like street vending, open-air drug markets, and homelessness.
